Frequently Asked Questions

What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the field of psychiatry, a branch of medicine aimed to study, diagnose, treat, and prevent mental illness. Becoming a psychiatrist requires a 4 year undergraduate degree followed by 4 years of medical school training and 3-4 years of specialized psychiatric training. Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medications with or without the addition of psychotherapy.

What is a child/adolescent psychiatrist?

A child/adolescent psychiatrist is a psychiatrist who has obtained an additional 2 years of training to work specifically with those under the age of 18.

What does "Board-Certified" mean and why does it matter?

Board certification signifies the highest level of accreditation within a medical specialty. To become board certified, a physician must complete additional testing and continuing education activities to maintain their certification status. Board certification is not required to practice medicine, but it does illustrate a physician's willingness and ability to apply expert competency in their chosen field of medicine. Dr. Guinan is a board-certified diplomat of adult and child/adolescent psychiatry under the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.

HOW CAN I COMMNUNICATE WITH DR. GUINAN?

Once scheduled for an initial evaluation, you will receive information on how to create a patient portal which links you to your medical record account. All additional communication with Dr. Guinan will occur through this portal, which is HIPPA compliant and securely stores your protected health information.

Is there anything I should do before the initial evaluation?

Upon scheduling an appointment, all new patients will receive a link with paperwork including office policies and forms pertaining to you or your child’s past psychiatric, medical, and family history. Please download and fill out the paperwork prior to your first psychiatric consultation. If this has not been completed one business day prior to your appointment, you will be rescheduled. Completing this paperwork in advance allows Dr. Guinan to explore symptoms more comprehensively and improves the quality of the evaluation.

Why doesn't Dr. Guinan accept insurance?

In order to provide the highest level of personalized treatment, Dr. Guinan does not accept insurance. This reimbursement approach ensures patient privacy, expands treatment options, and improves quality of care. Dr. Guinan can provide you with a medical receipt ("superbill") that you may submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement rates are plan-specific and it is recommended you contact your insurance agency for reimbursement coverage.

How will I know if my insurance will reimburse me for my visit?

When speaking with your insurer, state you are interested in seeing an out-of-network psychiatrist and whether you have out-of-network benefits. If they say no, then your insurance will not offer reimbursement for Seaglass Psychiatry services and you will be solely responsible for payment. If they say yes, you will want to ask about the details of those benefits including what they are willing to cover and if there is an out-of-network deductible that must be met prior to reimbursement. Many insurance plans will pay a percentage of a bill for out-of-network coverage. It may be helpful to ask specifically about reimbursement rates for the following medical service codes ("CPT codes") as they are used most frequently:
